Rosy Red—now available in stores!

Rosy Red Valencia is a new blush pink variety of valencia orange—and it is now available in grocery stores. The flesh and rind of the fruit glow with a soft rosy blush, making Rosy Red beautiful both inside and out. The blush color of the flesh and juice of Rosy Red contains the anti-oxidants lycopene and beta-carotene, making it a healthy choice for citrus lovers. Customers are testing the Rosy Red in recipes and discovering its versatility.

The Rosy Red is a summer orange, which means the harvest season is April through July. If you don’t see Rosy Red in your store, ask your grocer to add it to their stock.

Some fun ways to enjoy Rosy Red

  • Juicing

Rosy Red juice (left) is a lovely blush pink, which is very different from conventional valencia orange juice (right). The color of the Rosy Red is based on lycopene and beta-carotene, which is present in the juice and the flesh. The result is a delicious, colorful, and healthy juice. Bottoms up!

  • Rosy Red used in cocktails at Elixer in San Francisco

    Cocktails and mocktails

Mixologists love working with Rosy Red for its consistent flavor and beautiful color. Because Rosy Red juice remains colored even after sitting, it’s an ideal ingredient for cocktails and other drink recipes, including refreshing frozen frappes. And Rosy Red’s lovely blush pink rind makes a lovely garnish for any beverage.

  • Baking

Dessert recipes that call for oranges call even louder for Rosy Red. One customer recalls: “I wasn’t sure Rosy Red would be appropriate for my favorite blood orange upside-down cake, but I was thrilled with the results. The cake was moist and delicious and the blush pink made Tuesday night feel like a special occasion.”

  • Salads and other recipes

Rosy Red is delicious to eat on its own, but it also makes a colorful, healthy addition to salads and other dishes. Mix with yogurt and granola for a fresh start to your day. Turn duck à l’orange into duck à la Rosy Red. Reach for Rosy Red instead of lemon with seafood and brighten traditional sauces like teriyaki with a squeeze of Rosy Red.

  • Rosy Red used to make marmalade and oil

    Condiments

Rosy Red customers have enjoyed using the fruit to liven up their favorite homemade condiments like marmalades. And Rosy Red-infused oil (inset) can be made with extract from the rind. The fresh valencia flavor of Rosy Red and the beautiful blush pink helps to up-level traditional recipes whether they’re made for personal use or given as gifts.

  • Chimeras on the Rosy Red Valencia

    Racing stripes

Occasionally chimeras will be seen on the Rosy Red. A chimera is a natural occurrence of a genetic mutation that does not affect the taste of the fruit. We think it’s fun that a chimera can give the Rosy Red a little racing stripe where the pigment has reverted back to the original color, so we leave those fruits in the packed box. Look out for chimeras at the grocer!

The Rosy Red story, now in a children’s book

Enjoy this children’s tale with a colorful twist! It’s a story about the orange and how it has traveled and changed through history—from its birthplace, China, to Spain, and how the Spanish explorers carried these oranges to the New World. Miraculously, this provided the Rosy Red Valencia orange an opportunity to become a whole new variety. In fact, there is no other orange like it in the world.
